Are you ready to write like a D.R.A.G.O.N.? In this six part series, you’ll learn what it takes to step up your writing game and embrace your inner D.R.A.G.O.N.! First up, D for Discipline. Every good writer needs to have discipline. If you’re struggling a bit with your writing habits, here are 5 ways to improve your creative discipline.
1. Motivation
A true D.R.A.G.O.N. writer always finds proper motivation. To stay motivated in your craft, you’ll need to come up with something that reminds you of why you want to be a successful writer. Whether it’s a list of inspirational quotes—perhaps by authors you admire—or simply the bestseller at your local bookstore that you’d like to see your own novel sit beside. And if you want to be an even truer D.R.A.G.O.N., hang gemstones and glittering minerals in your writing space; it’ll become your personal lair.
2. Momentum
The best way to keep your writing momentum going is with a daily quota. D.R.A.G.O.N. writers are meticulous about this. Choose a word count goal to meet on a day-to-day basis. Stick with it. And even if you don’t make your daily word count, don’t give up. Try again the next day. Daily writing, once it becomes a habit, will be the one of the most helpful ways to stay disciplined.
3. Confidence
You are a writer. Start acting like one! D.R.A.G.O.N. writers are not ashamed to sing their own praises a bit, and neither should you. You may not be the best writer, but you still write. Writers write. Don’t be afraid that your output of creative material isn’t good enough. The important thing is that you stay confident in your ability to keep writing and keep improving. Outfly the competition by confidently moving forward, always.
4. Comfort
Remember to enjoy your writing. D.R.A.G.O.N. writers are comfort creatures, so it’s important to have a place to write that you truly feel comfortable in. And while you’re there in your comfortable writing space, remind yourself of why you love to write. If you’re passionate about your craft, you’ll discover that discipline and enjoyment can go hand in hand.
5. Celebrate
Find ways to celebrate your successes. D.R.A.G.O.N.s are self-indulgent creatures; there’s nothing wrong with that! When you write, find ways to reward yourself when you reach a particular goal. Celebrate reaching your word quota for the week with your favorite dessert. Celebrate finishing your novel with something even better. Finally, if you want a truer dragon experience, celebrate with fire. D.R.A.G.O.N. writers love fire. And fireworks.
Now you know the five important keys to becoming your own writing disciplinarian. So don’t delay… your inner D.R.A.G.O.N. is calling you to write! And be sure to watch for Part 2 of this series coming soon.
